Delhi to Vrindavan: A Perfect Weekend Trip

Vrindavan is one of the easiest and most rewarding weekend getaways from Delhi — close enough to reach in a morning, rich enough to fill two full days. Here's a practical Delhi to Vrindavan trip plan: how to get there, when to go, which temples to prioritise, and where to stay so the weekend feels restful rather than rushed.

How to get there

Vrindavan is around 160–180 km from Delhi depending on where you start in the NCR, and the drive down the Yamuna Expressway is smooth and fast.

By car

The quickest option: take the Yamuna Expressway toward Mathura, then the Chhatikara exit straight into Vrindavan. Expect roughly 2.5 to 4 hours depending on your starting point and traffic — early morning departures (5–7 AM) are consistently the fastest, since midday and evening trips near the city can stretch past 4 hours. One-way toll on the expressway runs approximately ₹400–450.

By train

Trains like the Gatimaan Express, Shatabdi Express and Taj Express connect New Delhi / Hazrat Nizamuddin to Mathura Junction in about 1.5 to 2.5 hours. From Mathura Junction, Vrindavan is a further 12–15 km — a 20–30 minute auto or cab ride away.

By bus

AC and non-AC buses run from Kashmiri Gate and Anand Vihar ISBT to Mathura or directly to Vrindavan Bus Stand, taking roughly 3.5 to 4.5 hours — the most budget-friendly option, though least flexible on timing.

Best time to go

October to March is the most comfortable window — pleasant days, cool evenings, ideal for walking between temples. Festival periods like Janmashtami (September 4, 2026) and Holi are spectacular but extremely crowded, and stays sell out weeks ahead. If you want calm darshan, pick a normal weekend outside festival dates and book your stay early. During Janmashtami, expressway traffic near Mathura builds up from the evening before — plan to arrive well ahead or after midnight.

A 2-day temple itinerary

Day 1 — Arrival & the big temples

Reach Vrindavan by late morning and check in. Visit Prem Mandir in the afternoon for the marble carvings by daylight (open 8:30 AM – 8:30 PM), then stay on for the evening musical fountain and light show — 7:00–7:30 PM in winter, 7:30–8:00 PM in summer. Nearby, ISKCON Vrindavan holds evening aarti in its 4:15–8:15 PM darshan window. End the day at the Chandrodaya Mandir area nearby.

Day 2 — The classic Vrindavan core

Start early for Banke Bihari Temple — it opens around 7:45 AM in summer (8:45 AM in winter), and mornings are calmer with more intimate darshan than the 5:30–9:30 PM evening rush. Walk the old lanes to Radha Raman and the sacred grove of Nidhivan (closed after sunset). Wrap up with a quiet riverside moment before heading back to Delhi by afternoon.

Temple timings shift 30–60 minutes between summer and winter — it's worth a quick check closer to your travel date.

Two days is enough to cover Vrindavan's essential temples without rushing — as long as your stay is close enough that you're not losing hours in traffic each way.

Where to stay

This is what makes or breaks a weekend trip. Staying inside the crowded temple core means constant noise and no parking; staying too far means long daily commutes. The sweet spot is the Chhatikara Road side — around 1.5 km from Prem Mandir and ISKCON, in a quiet gated society with secure parking. You get quick access to darshan and a peaceful base to return to. A private, couple friendly apartment near Prem Mandir is far more restful than a busy hotel for a short trip like this.
